If you find something and you don’t see any signs ((סימן that proves that it belongs to someone, you can keep it. Rabbi Meir said, scattered fruits (פרות מפוזרים), scattered moneyמעות)    מפוזרות), loaves of bread from a specific baker (ככרות של נחתום), dates/figs in a circle (עיגולי דבלה), dried fish on a line (מחכזות של דגים),

pieces of meat,(חתיחות של בשר) bundles of yarn (גזי צמר), and bundles/seeds of flax (פשתן)have no signs, so you can keep them. Rabbi Yehuda said, if you find a special tray with ceramic design (עגול ובתוכו חרס) or bread with money (לחם עם כסף) inside of it you must declare you found it because they have signs. To declare you found it you must go to the city square ((ככר העיר and you must show the people the object or you don’t have to show it but you must describe the object. Also Rabbi Shimon-ben-Elizar said, if you find brand new kitchen ware

(כל כלי אנפוריא) then you may keep it because there are no signs.

OUR GRAPHIC NOVEL :

:המקרה שחקרנו עליו באינטרנט

There was a man named Ted Mogil who was given a prayer book. He was the only Jew in the army so he grew attached to the prayer book. While fighting in World War 2 it was the only connection to his religion. He kept the book with him no matter where he went.  He said he always kept it in his shirt pocket. Every single day no matter where he went. After the war he got married and they left their Nebraskan hometown. He did not know where his prayer book was until, Sixty seven years later a twelve year old boy named Will Beach was browsing through a used book sale at his temple and found an old prayer book that he could tell was used in the army, with the name Ted Mogil inside the book cover. Using his own money he bought the book and eventually he found and returned the book to Ted Mogil after researching on the internet for a very long time. He found Ted in Washington, so Will Beach had to travel half way around the country to return the prayer book.

:הקשר של המקרה שחקרנו למשנה

The difference from the Mishnah and our case is that:

   A) In the Mishnah farmers used to drop and lose their produce and just leave it, because it was too hard to get it back and they were frustrated but in the story, Ted lost his prayer book that had his name and someone returned it because they could find the owner through his name. Ted loved his prayer book and kept it in his shirt pocket and wouldn’t let it out of his sight because he loved it so much and cared a lot if he lost it. (Aaron and Zahava)

The similarity of the Mishnah to our case is that:

In the Mishnah there was a name inside of the prayer book and the name inside the book was a sign, so he could return it to the rightful owner. (Alex and Cayley)

Rabbi Yehuda said “everything that has a sign should be declared it was found”

((כל שיש בו שינוי, חיב להכריז. This is our connection to the Mishnah.   (Revital)
